Derbyshire Building Society.
The history of the Derbyshire Building Society dates
back to 1859. Mergers along the way include nn 1966, a merger with the
Ashbourne Permanent Benefit Building Society and the Somercotes Building
Society. In 2001 the Ilkeston Permanent Building Society was taken over. On the 8 September 2008 it was announced that
they would be merging with the Nationwide due to anticipated losses
of £17 million in the first 6 months of the year. For the first time members
did not get a vote as the Financial Services Authority forced it through under
sections 42B(3)(b) of the Building Societies Act in relation to The Derbyshire
and 94(5)(b) in relation to Nationwide. As a result the merger proceeded on the
basis of Board resolutions of the Derbyshire and Nationwide Boards, rather than
by member vote.
