About Stroud & Swindon Building Society.
Stroud and Swindon Building Society was originally
established in 1850 as the Stroud Provident Benefit Building Society. A Merger
with the Swindon Permanent Building Society in 1986 led to the change to the
current title of Stroud & Swindon. In 2010 The society was facing a
financial squeeze and having lost £5.8 million the year before agreed to a
takeover by the Coventry Building Society. The takeover/merger was completed in
2010.

Before the merger Stroud & Swindon Building Society
had assets in excess of £2.7 billion. The Society operated through a branch
network of 22 offices and 21 agencies in the South West, complemented by a
customer contact centre based in Gloucestershire and its website.
The merger in the closure of the head office with the
transfer of these activities to Coventry although the Coventry Building Society
guaranteed that they would not close any Stroud and Swindon Building Society
branch offices for 12 months.
